From Ballet Slippers to Ballroom Heels

They say it is never too late to become who you were meant to be.

I am living proof of that.

I grew up with a deep, abiding love for ballet. It was my first language.

My formal training began during my upbringing in Boston, where I danced under the instruction of the Beverly School of Dance. My childhood goal was crystal clear: I wanted to dance for the Boston Ballet.

While I never made it to the Boston Ballet stage, the dream did not end with me. I am incredibly proud that my niece, Hannah, fulfilled that legacy and danced for the Boston Ballet herself.

From Raleigh to Rhythm

Less than ten years ago, I decided to try again. I returned to the barre, taking lessons at the Raleigh School of Ballet. It was a beautiful return to my roots, and I realized that I will always love ballet; it is a part of my soul.

However, I also realized that I had matured. My body did not handle the rigors of ballet the way it used to when I was young. It was time for an evolution.

Before I knew it, I had fallen in love with American Style Ballroom. On the ballroom floor, I found I could express the elegance of my past while embracing the woman I am today. I have since developed my own unique style—one that blends my classical foundation with the freedom of ballroom.

The Ballerina Doll

My life began with a challenge, battling the sickle cell trait as a child, but it also began with a dream. The year was 1968. I was four and a half years old when the popular Mattel doll, "Dancerina Ballerina," appeared on TV. I knew instantly that I had to have her.

On Christmas morning, my parents took a picture of me holding that doll. Looking back at that little girl, I realize now: That is who I am. That moment defined me.

Why I Dance

My dancing has become a true passion project. It is the vessel through which I tell my story—of who I was, who I am, and how I arrived at this beautiful moment in life.

I realized that my "global fan club"—friends and colleagues spanning 49 offices on five continents—looked forward to my performances. You gave me the courage to turn this personal healing into a public celebration.

Recognition & Healing

My dedication to this art form was honored when I was named a 2025 Grant Award Nominee for the New Artist with the North Carolina Arts Council.

Thank you for walking (and dancing) this path with me.
